About This Item

186 pages with maps, charts, figures, illustrations, appendix and bibliography. Quarto (11 1/4" x 8 3/4") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Edited by Carol Clark. First edition. Between 1979 and 1981 a team of archaeologists explored on foot about 5000 square kilometers of semidesert Secow Valley on the South African central plateau. This task netted them an inventory of 16,000 Stone Age surface site - a remarkable data base on which to test various theories about the spatial organization of ancient hunter-forager societies. the most recent of these were the now-defunct Bushman (San) who unlike the modern Kalahari San, made stone tools and pottery. During 1982 and 1984, teams returned to collect the decorated pottery sherds from 1,000 bushman camps in the upper valley. This book is a study of the valley wide distributions of Bushman decorative pottery motifs. Condition: Jacket edge wear with some rubbing and closed tears else a very good to fine in a better than very good dust jacket.
