Cleveland and New York: The World Publishing Company, 1952. First Edition. Cloth and boards. Near Fine/Near Fine. John Groth. 4to, beige cloth and orange cloth, Mylar-protected dust jacket illustrated by John Groth, pictorial endpapers with sketches by Groth, 208 pages. John Groth (1908 - 1988) was a highly respected illustrator working in watercolors and etchings whose subjects often dealt with war and sports. Groth was born in Chicago and educated at its Art Institute & Art Students League; as well as with T. Geller, A. Blanch, and Grosz . He spent much of his career moving between Chicago and NYC, where he served as Art Director at Esquire (1933 - 1937); Parade Publications (1941 - 1944); War Correspondent for Chicago Sun (1944); and the American Legion Magazine, among others. He was a frequent contributor to Vogue, Esquire, and Collier's. Groth was widely exhibited at F.A.R. Gallery in New York City; Dayton Art Institute; the National Academy of Design; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Corcoran and the 1939 Worlds Fair in New York. His works are held by The National Art Museum of Sport; Butler Institute of American Art; Georgia Museum of Art; National Museum of the Marine Corps; National Portrait Gallery; and U.S. Department of the Interior Museum. Exceptional condition for such a large volume published during and about the Korean War. One 1/2" chip is missing from the rear panel of the dust jacket.
