Illustrator: Illustrated. prefatory note by editor, preface and description of plates by author, appendix and index. At the beginning of the text there is five page foldout map of coral reefs throughout the world (at time of book's publication). The text is illustrated with black-and-white line illustrations and another four pink and black coloured plates, showing various coral reefs. Red coloured cloth covered boards with black coloured illustration and titles to the front panel and gilt and black coloured titles and black coloured illustration to the back strip. An explanation of the creation of coral reefs by Charles Darwin, which was first published in 1842, and was updated as more information came to light. Series editor – Ernest Rhys. Softening of the back strip edges with bumping and rubbing of the book corners. Fading to the back strip with light browning of the text block edges and scattered foxing – predominantly to the top text block edge. Offset tanning and slight foxing to the endpapers with some foxing to the first few and last few pages of the book. Age toning of the pages. Previous owner's name to the top right hand corner of the free front endpaper. The book appears to be free of annotation. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
