The prototype for McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. This screenplay began in 1972 as a scenario intended for actors John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and James Stewart to be in, then it ballooned to 288 pages, but the film failed to materialize. Larry McMurtry wasn't finished with the story, though, and over the next few years he reworked and expanded it into the 843 page novel, Lonesome Dove, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1985. Four years later that novel became a celebrated TV miniseries.
