New York: The Limited Editions Club [printed at the Wild Carrot Letterpress], 1982. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Hirschfeld, Al. No. 351 of 2000, folio size, approx. [130] pp., signed by Al Hirschfeld. Of all the American playwrights of the twentieth century, Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) is considered one of the greatest; he met with early success with his play "The Glass Menagerie", and his popularity continued with the publication of "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1947. Considered Williams' greatest play, "Streetcar" won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and received further notice with the making of the 1951 film starring Marlon Brando, who was also in the original Broadway production. This publication by the Limited Editions Club features line drawings by American caricaturist Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003), whose drawings here capture the distortion and emotion found in the characters and their relationships. This volume also contains an introduction by Jessica Tandy (1909-1994), who starred as Blanche DuBois in the original Broadway play. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter burgundy leather with Clarence House cloth boards screen-printed in thirteen colours, gilt lettering on the spine, lilac endpapers, frontispiece a four-colour lithograph by Al Hirschfeld, six line drawings printed in two colours by Hirshfeld throughout; monotype Times New Roman, Mohawk eggshell wove paper, folio size (12.75" by 8"), approximately 130 unnumbered pages, one of 2000 copies, this number 351, signed by Al Hirschfeld on the colophon. With LEC Monthly Newsletter, one sheet folded once measuring 11" by 8.5", then folded once again for mailing. In a slipcase covered with cream paper with gilt lettering on the spine. ___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings. From the archive of the PIX Agency, a photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers (as well as those still living in Europe) and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969. Tennessee Williams' masterpiece, a landmark of modern American theatre, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and basis for the 1951 film also directed by Elia Kazan, with Marlon Brando reprising his role as Stanley. The play debuted at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven in November 1947, before eventually moving to the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway on December 3, 1947. Description:
New York: New Directions, 1947. First edition of A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams's first play to win the Pulitzer Prize, signed by the entire original cast, including Jessica Tandy, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden. Produced by Irene Mayer Selznick and directed by Elia Kazan, the original stage production opened in New Haven on October 30, 1947: the program for that first performance is present here, with three ticket stubs from the Shubert Theatre. The show then moved to Boston and Philadelphia before arriving on Broadway, where Tandy would win the Tony for her performance as the fragile, self-deluding Blanche DuBois: "Whoever you are - I have always depended on the kindness of strangers." Wolcott Gibbs, in a rave review for The New Yorker, regretted that "there is no way . . . to convey the effect Mr. Williams achieves in his last act of a mind desperately retreating into the beautiful, crazy world it has built for itself." A wonderful association copy, with related ephemera… Read More
