About This Item
UK,slim 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn. VG/VG. No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,wrap-around glossy, colour pictorial artwork by Sarah Fo0x-Davies, illustrated dw/dj with author's capitalised,cream-lettered name, capitalised white-lettered title to front of dw/dj; spine/backstrip with capitalised white-lettered title, author's capitalised black-lettered name and publisher's capitalised,white-lettered name to foot of same, rear panel of dw/dj with continuation of colour illustration.Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners – the majority of light creasing and curling to top edges of dw/dj with some minimal creasing at spine's head,a small closed tear with concomitant diagonal crease at front, top corner tip and a tiniest of nicks to rear, top corner tip too - but no other major nicks, tears or splits present and both panels with age-acquired superficial scoring/indents but without any penetration to boards beneath.Top edges with the heavier of the ageing/toning and with dust flecking, fore-edges also with the ubiquitous ageing/toning this issue is prone to - due to quality of the paper stock used; contents tight, solid and sound but with page-edge toning – but no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips – would appear unread, apart from my own collation. Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,original plain grey cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettering to spine/backstrip,and clean, plain white endpapers.UK,slim 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,7-174pp [paginated] includes 20 chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, and a dedication. Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable and even internally,is also in an acceptable condition, for a book of its 35+ year-old age and nature, i.e. a child's book. It is only the faults described that prevents a higher grading overall.Despite those described,it is still an acceptable example for its age. A proud old alley cat tells his life story to his grandson, including his adventures in a convent,in a feline commune, and with his hearer's grandmother. In this uncompromising, virtuoso novel,A. N. Wilson enters the mind of a cat with remarkable skill and conviction.'Stray' is a book that will be read and purred over by lovers of cats and good literature,of all ages, for many years to come. A. N. Wilson is one of this country's (UK) most distinguished novelists. He has twice won the prestigious John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize and was awarded the 1981 Somerset Maugham Award for his novel 'The Healing Art'.He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the author of a number of biographies. 'Stray' is the author's first cat autobiography - he has since written a picture book,'The Tabitha Stories' about the daughter of "the stray", Pufftail - and he is also the author of another animal story,'Hazel the Guinea-pig'. A confirmed cat lover,he writes: "I can think of many ways in which I would be a better person if I were more like my cats, but I cannot think of a single way in which my cats would be better for being more like me. If reading this story prevents one adult from torturing a cat in a laboratory,or one child child from tormenting a cat in a backyard,or one family from getting a kitten when they have no idea how to provide for its needs, then I would consider it was a story well worth writing."
