Titus Wilson & Son, Kendal, 1949. 183 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations - photographs, reproductions. "....(brings) together for the first time the many references to Ulverston in the local books of the last two-hundred years. With them there is muc h new and hitherto unpublished information, the whole being skilfully wrought into a continuous story. In it the growth of the town during eight-hundred years is traced, and the life of its people, their work and pleasure, their high-momen t s a n d t h eir troubles, revealed. The author feels he has written a social history, one that not only lets the reader see Ulverston, but lights up in a small degree the larger life of England of which the Story of Ulverston forms part." Cont en ts : Th e T ow n; Ancient History; The Seventeenth Century; The Empory of Furness; The Flowering; The Years Between; Victorian Ulverston; A New Century; The Wars Years and After; The Country-side. Very minor soiling and browning on endpapers, pre vio us own er 's bo okp late on front pastedown, light browning and tiny light foxing marks on edges of textblock, light edge wear at corners and at top/bottom of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny areas of color fading on b oard s. Dust ja cke t ha s mo derate to heavy edge wear/wrinkling, several small chips and tears - some with creases, faint foxing marks, light rubbing/soiling. Very Good-/Good.
