About This Item

New York: Dutton, 1947. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Octavo, 286pp., illustrated. A fresh, clean copy in the publisher's blue cloth, with the spine very gently cocked, but otherwise better than usually found, about fine, in a near fine dust jacket, with some short tears at the extremities, else fresh. A nice association copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by J. Edgar Hoover in the year of publication to one of his Assistant Directors, Alex Rosen: "To Alex Rosen, With the most cordial of good wishes from his friend J. Edgar Hoover 4.16.47." Rosen, a native of Akron, Ohio, rose through the ranks of the FBI, serving as Special Agent in several locations, ultimately becoming an Assistant Director to Hoover in 1942, a position he held until Hoover's death in 1972. Rosen's retirement was briefly written up in the New York Times. Though Dutton often stated first printings, we have never seen a stated first printing of this volume, and presume this copy to be a first, especially given the early inscription. Hoover could be generous with his autograph, but this book is uncommon signed, particularly in such fresh condition.

About Cleveland Book Company

We are proud members of the ABAA.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
