Putnam's Sons, 1905, First edition. . original cloth with gilt bordered leather spine label with gilt title lettering, gilt design, spine darkened, cover lightly soiled, interior clean, very good. . thick 8vo [23 x 16 cm]; xv, 634 pp, frontis portrait from painting, 125 illustrations from photos on plates, bird's-eye view, 2 maps including large folding colored, tables, index, with the errata slip at page x (often lacking). . A thorough description of the Belgian Congo, its political system, history, colonial government, communications, rails, roads, trade, education system, much on slavery, tribes, etc. The detailed appendices are documents, treaties, letters, reports, etc. The author was a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a New York lawyer and wrote the work to defend the current regime against opponents.
