Description:
Charleston: Evans & Cogswell, 1860. Paperback. 8vo. Wrappers. 6pp. Very good. Although the goal of this report was to urge the state conventions of South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida "that no final separate State action shall be taken upon the question of secession from the Union, until a general Convention of the Southern States can be had," it was not received before South Carolina's withdrawal; therefore, this pamphlet became South Carolina's attempt "briefly to state the causes which induced the passage of the Ordinance" to Georgians. This she does, passionately, and, yes, briefly. A very scarce Confederate imprint. PARRISH 3815.

Boston: : Lee and Shepard Publishers (New York: Chas T. Dillingham),, 1889.. Hardcover first edition -. Good only (some overall wear to the covers, fraying to the sides of the spine, missing rear endpaper, but still sturdy condition.) Very uncommon in the first edition with no copies currently available for sale. . First printing. Classic Civil War novel about an Andersonville prisoner-of-war John Rockwell, who reaches across the "deadline" to pluck a bunch of violets, and about the Southern soldier and prison guard, Jack Foster, who ignores regulations and does not shoot him. When this was first published, almost twenty-five years had passed since the Civil War, but sectarian feelings still ran high on the subject of how prisoners-of-war were treated, and Andersonville, especially, was an example to the North of inhumane treatment. Although there was beginning to be some recognition that neither the North nor the South were blameless, and that it was the nature of the war itself that…

Description:
New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1863. First Edition. 18mo (6"x4"). One of the rarest books on Civil War leadership and the responsibilities of Company officers. The principal portion of this work was written while the author was confined as a prisoner of war in the State of Georgia, and contains, in a small compass, a large amount of information to Company Officers which can not be found in the "Regulations." An officer can not fail to be better qualified for a command after a careful perusal of its pages. Andrews served with the Third Regiment Minnesota Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, rising from his role as Lt. Colonel at Vicksburg to full Colonel at Fitzhugh's Woods and finally to Brigadier General at Pine Bluff. In 1865 he was assigned to the command of the Second Division of the VIII Corps and participated in the siege of Fort Blakely and then finished his role in command of the Mobile division where he was brevetted Major General. 68pp., (16)pp ads at rear. bound in red cloth lettered in gilt, spine…
