About This Item

Arthur Barker Limited, London 1968 hardcover, 9 1/2" x 7 1/2", with dust jacket Ours is an ex-library review copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, barcode & pocket. VERY GOOD book in GOOD unclipped dust jacket Black cloth-bound boards with gold type to spine, 86 b&w photographs, index. In 1783 the first actual aerial voyage by man was made in France in a balloon designed by the famous Montgolfier brothers. A century later, in 1900, Count von Zeppelin launched a cigar-shaped giant that was 400 feet long; the first of the mammoth airships. After his successes, people began to believe the dirigible, not the airplane, was the future of air transportation. This is the story of the great silver airships that roamed the skies in a glorious age that came to an end with the tragic explosion of the luxurious 'Hindenburg'.
