About This Item

The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:

Barbara Michaels: This is another pseudonym used by Barbara Mertz, better known as Elizabeth Peters. As Michaels, she is known for Gothic and supernatural thrillers. Mertz wrote 29 novels as Michaels, 39 as Peters, and one nonfiction book under her real name. Mertz died in 2013. This is the third of three books in Michaels' Georgetown series.

Reginald Hill: British writer Hill wrote under his own name and three pen names. He was a winner of multiple awards for his writing. He created two series, the Dalziel and Pascoe series of 27 novels and the Joe Sixsmith series of five. Hill published an additional 24 stand alone novels. Hill died in 2012. This is the second Joe Sixsmith novel.

Gillian Linscott: Gillian Linscott, aka Caro Peacock, is a former British journalist and radio correspondent who made the plunge into full time mystery writer in 1984 at the age of 40. Since then, she has published 18 novels, including two series, featuring Birdie Linnett (3) and Nell Bray (11). Her most recent work was published in 2003. This is the forth Nell Bray book, which has also been published under the title Widow's Peak.

Synopsis

When an antique bridal quilt appears under mysterious circumstances at the vintage clothing shop where Rachel Grant works, she is fascinated. She has never been able to resist handmade textiles from the past, for she believes that through the ages, women wove protective magic into their fabrics in order to mark the important events of their lives: birth, marriage, and death. But there is more than good in the quilt's magic power. Day by day Rachel sees and feels the power growing, as she senses the quilt influencing her thoughts and actions. Much as Rachel's logical mind longs to deny the supernatural, the aura of evil coming from the quilt is terrifyingly real, and it seems to carry a sinister legacy into the lives of the people Rachel loves.
