About This Item

London: Printed for the Nonesuch Press by Richard Clay, 1927. First Printing. Wraps. Very good. No. 1122 of 1525 copies. Small quarto, marbled wraps, very good, faint waterstain to top inner corner of text, housed in cloth chemise and quarter leather slipcase; the slipcase with a little bit of rubbing and wear to leather and light discoloration to small areas of the cloth part. The letter from Laver, on Saville Club stationary, dated Feb. 2, 1928, reads as follows: "Dear Miss Moseley, I am flattered that you should wish to read 'A Stitch in Time,' and only wish I could see any way of helping you. The last copy I bought for a friend cost me 25/-, and my solitary own copy is going the rounds of my friends -- with still a long way to go. So what can I do? Perhaps, as Mr. Bennett suggests, the price will soon fall to a reasonable figure. Believe me, no-one is more conscious than myself of the disadvantages of a limited edition. Yours sincerely, James Laver." Apparently the poem is a humorous parody or imitation of Pope's "The Rape of the Lock" set in modern times.
