New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1937. Hardcover. 8vo. Black cloth with green lettering and gold rules, pictorial dust jacket. 356pp. Very good/good plus. Jacket rather edgeworn and a bit rubbed, with several tiny edge chips and faintly sunned spine; 1" glue stain to rear board. Handsome and tight first edition of this regional writer's first lengthy novel -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from him, 1p, 5¼" X 8", Sauk City, WI, 23 June 1971. Addressed to Bill Cummings. Near fine. On letterhead featuring striking woodcut at top, Derleth chats about "Selected Writings of Violet Sturgis Cosby," in part: "I don't have time to read it now, but I will hold it here if you don't mind until such time as I can go through it...." He mentions fellow regionalist writer Jerry Apps ("Yes, I know & reviewed Jerry Apps's book. He will be teaching on the same program with me in July....") and closes off with "Good hunting in New England!" Signed large and bold in blue ballpoint.
