About This Item
Germany: Filmverleih Die Lupe, 1960. German poster for the original release of the legendary 1960 jazz documentary, set at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, shot in high style by commercial and fashion photographer Bert Stern. In addition to the iconic figures noted on the poster, the film also features Theolonious Monk, Jimmy Giuffre, Dinah Washington, Chuck Berry, Chico Hamilton, and others.
In European fashion, the poster emphasizes photographer/director/cinematographer Stern ahead of all things, embracing the notion of the auteur in the documentary realm long before such a thing became fashionable. Stern's naturalistic approach to shooting a festival event, the first of its kind to be attempted on such a scale, influenced and predicted by several years many similar documentaries, such as Monterey Pop" (1968), "Woodstock" (1970), and "The Concert for Bangladesh" (1972).
23 x 16 inches. Near Fine, folded twice as issued, bright and clean.
National Film Registry.
