Stereoscopic photo card with printed caption "(2) 4687 Fort Magnesia, winter quarters of the Stein Arctic Expedition, Cape Sabine, Ellesmere Land (79 degrees N. Latitude)." The explorer Robert Stein (1857-1917) took part in several Arctic expeditions, including as an Eskimo interpreter of Robert Edwin Perry. He led an expedition himself to Ellesmere Island from 1899 to 1901, wintering at Fort Magnesia. Stein committed suicide in 1917, apparently depressed in part by the start of World War I.
