Near Fine, the label perhaps refreshed at a later date, with the bookplate of Gower Earl Gower front paste down and Gower's coat-of-arms printed verso of title page of Steps to the Temple, Lord Gower having obviously had this copy bound to his specifications. TWO VOLUMES bound as one. "Steps to the Temple" and "The Delights of the Muses" are actually the 3rd editions even though stating second edition, while "Carmen Deo Nostro" and "Poemata et Epigrammata, Quae Scripsit Latina & Graeca" are both second editions. John Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Gower, PC ( 1694 -1754) was an English Tory politician and peer who twice served as Lord Privy Seal from 1742 to 1743 and 1744 to 1754. Leveson-Gower also served in the Parliament of Great Britain, where he sat in the House of Lords as a leading member of the Tories, prior to switching his political affiliation and serving in various Whig-led government ministries until his death in 1754. A quite handsome copy, Crashaw's early editions are uncommon. . Second Edition. Calf. Near Fine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Description:
New York: Modern Library, (1946). Hardcover. Very Good in a Very Good dustwrapper. Reprint of this popular collection which features Frost's essay on poetry, "The Constant Symbol," as an introduction. This copy has been SIGNED by the author and INSCRIBED to minor poet and folklorist Addison Barker with the complete eight-line poem "The Pasture," the first poem in the book, in the poet's hand on the page opposite the title page. The recipient's signature is on the front endpaper above a pasted newspaper photograph of Frost, and Barker has noted on the title page the date Frost wrote the poem in the book: 25 January 1950. Barker has an interesting connection to Frost in that in 1951 he published the discovery of the very first appearance in print (BLUM'S FARMER'S AND PLANTER'S ALMANAC FOR 1850) of the proverb "Good fences make good neighbors." Barker tried to find an earlier, New England appearance before publication in the North Carolina almanac but was unsuccessful. There were previous variants on… Read More

Description:
1664 1st ed NEW YORK George Downing Discourse on DUTCH Settlements Indians 2v
Two exceedingly rare first editions of George Downing's defense of New York!
George Downing was an Irish preacher and political apologist known for his service under Oliver Cromwell in Scotland. In 1664 he wrote a short political letter describing the details of his arrangement of the acquisition of New York from the Dutch. 'A Discourse', as it is called, was written to clear his own name from any misconduct in the exchange. One of the most notable discussions in this work is a report on the miserable interactions of the Dutch settlers with local Indian tribes, as well as business and trade in New York. It should be noted that this work is considered one of the earliest works relating to New York in English! (Stevens).
A year after his first letter was written, he wrote his own reply – a work, which according to 'Rare Americana', was
"privately printed, and relates principally to the affairs of the English and Dutch West… Read More

First edition of a poetry book essential for the history of Renaissance music, as it constitutes the first organic collection of Torquato Tasso and Battista Guarini's poems.
According to scholars, Tasso and Guarini were the poets whose verses were most frequently set by Italian madrigalists and monodists in the late 16th and 17th centuries. From the 1570s through the 1630s, virtually all composers of secular vocal music in Italy and Europe, including notable ones like Luca Marenzio and Claudio Monteverdi, set one or more of their… Read More

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence. Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
