About This Item

Great Britain: Arcady Books, 1985. Paperback. In the Steps of Jane Austen. Photographs by Mike Edwards. Jane Austen was proud of being what she termed ' a Hampshire-born Austen', but her world was not confined to Steventon, the village near Bastingstoke where she was born, or Chawton, near Alton, where she spent her later years. She visited Kent frequently, lived in Bath and Southampton and knew London well. She stayed with relatives at Great Bookham near Box Hill in Surrey, and spent summers by the sea in several West Country resorts including her favourite Lyme Regis. For the last weeks of her life she lodged in Winchest where, at her own request, she was buried in the cathedral. Today we may still walk in her world. This new account of Jane's life and work is arranged as a series of walking tours through the towns and countryside she knew and loved - the settings for her novels. We are introduced to the real-life people she met on her journeys, many of whom live on, thinly disguised, as the characters in her books. And from thse encounters we gain a deeper understanding of Jane herself and fresh insight into her work. It is not necessary to visit the places described in order to enjoy this book but for readers who - like Jane herself - are keen walkers, maps and directions have been included. The text of this secind edition has been revised and some new material added, including one complete chapter. It is illustrated with contemporary prints and over sixty photographs which were specially taken to complement the text. Illustrated. 188 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.). 2nd Edition Enlarged and Illustrated. Soft Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Paperback.
