About This Item
London: Cape, 1986. Uncorrected Bound Proof. Paperback. A very good plus copy in a very good trial jacket with some chipping at spine crown (jacket is 1/2 inch higher than the proof). Winner of the Man Booker Prize for Fiction 2011. Author's fourth novel charts the life of Jean Serjeant, from her beginning as a naive, carefree country girl before the war through to her wry and trenchant old age in the year 2020. We follow her bruising experience in marriage, her probing of male truths, her adventures in motherhood and in China and we learn cannot fail to be moved by the questions she asks of life and the often unsatisfactory answers it provides. This proof copy is perfect bound in the original decorated wrappers. In the trial dust jacket which has the title of the book at the top of the front panel and the author's name at the bottom of the front cover. Ditto on the front cover of the proof as well. The finished dust jacket has the title and the author's name reversed; author's name at the top of the front cover and title at the bottom of the front cover.
