Page edges of the book are very slightly darkened with age, and the previous owner's name is on the half title page. The book is illustrated with a black-and-white frontispiece, and 20 one half plates, and photographs, as well as to sketch maps and a line drawing. All lives are lived on a number of different levels. The picture here given of Stanley Spencer is based on his most intimate thoughts and feelings. It shows the deepest side of his nature but it inevitably, to some extent, excludes the other levels on which he enjoyed much of his everyday life, and on which he met his family, friends and acquaintances.
