About This Item

Washington DC: Smithsonian, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. As New/fine. Washington DC: Smithsonian, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. As New/fine. 1st Edition. Hardback. As New. A recounting of the vital but untold story of the USAAF's antisubmarine operations against German U-boats during the crisis of the Battle of the Atlantic in late 1942 and 1943. During this period, the 479th and 480th USAAF Antisubmarine Groups, deployed to England and North Africa, worked with the RAF to stop German Admiral Doenitz's raiders before they could prey on Allied commerce and supply routes in the shipping corridors of the North Atlantic. As well as tracing the development of essential technology, including centimetric radar mounted in increasingly sophisticated aircraft, the author gives a real sense of the personal cost and effort that went into flying extremely long and tiring missions, in hostile skies over unforgiving seas. By the end of 1943 the US Navy assumed sole American responsibility for antisubmarine warfare, but not before USAAF planes and men made a distinctive contribution to the battle at sea. Contains 231-pages, 23.5 x 15.5cm, with 12-pages of b&w photos, 4 x maps, and 9 x appendices covering a range of topics and statistics. Black cloth quarter-binding with blue boards in Fine pictorial dust-jacket. Internally, As New: clean, bright and unmarked in excellent bindings. Looks, feels and smells like new.
