NY, Century, 1887, 1st edition hardcover, red decorated cloth with gilt and black decor and beveled edges, fair but sound and tight, very bright and attractive, but there is some moth damage at top and base of the spine and on the top and other part of the front cover (cloth is eaten through at places), internally very good and unmarked, nice black and white ills. Contributors include James Otis, Celia Thaxter, Joseph Pennell, Frank R. Stockton, Louisa May Alcott and many others. 7-1/8""x9-3/4"", paginated 482-960. Still quite attractive.

New York: The Century Co, 1882. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 2 matching, handsome volumes. Large and heavy 8vo. Original red cloth boards, richly decorated with black and gilt tooling (designed by H W Troy), bevelled edges, pictorial two-tone endpapers, tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece & profusely illustrated throughout. Both volumes heavily rubbed at edges and joints, with some fraying; volume two is a little faded and marked. Front free endpaper paper creased in volume one. Previous owner's inscription, dated 1882, on title page in both volumes. Binding weakened by still holding firm. Still attractive. These two volumes contain 12 issues of the monthly St Nicholas Illustrated Magazine which in turn contained some of the finest writing, illustrations and amusements (how to guides, puzzles, games etc) for children. These volumes contain works by William Wordsworth, Louisa M Alcott (An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving) and many others.

The head and tail of the spines are very lightly bumped with minor rubbing to the corners of the covers. Pages [i]-viii & [1]-576; and pages [i]-viii & [577]-1152, respectively, with full-page and textual illustrations in color and black & white including those by Will Bradley illustrating his own stories as well as a full-page color plate by Arthur Rackham titled "The Little Piper". The front hinge of the second volume is cracked opposite the front blank with a short tear to the bottom edge of the front endpaper. There is a small piece out of the corner of page 519 of the first volume. The bindings are slightly shaken. An early owner's name with the date is penned on the front blank of each volume.
