About This Item
London: Macmillan And Co., 1961. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. 9.5" by 7". Jean Primrose. A wonderfully illustrated first edition of this legend, retold by Rumer Godden in verse. Rumer Godden (1907-1998) was a prolific English author, writing over sixty works during her lifetime, in particular children's works. Her notable works include 'The Diddakoi', which won a Whitbread Award in 1972, 'Black Narcissus; and 'The River'. This legend tells of St. Jerome, who healed the paw of a lion which then adored him as an owner: Godden has poeticised the tale naturally and eloquently. Illustrated throughout by Jean Primrose. In the publisher's original cloth binding with an unclipped dust wrapper. Externally very smart, minor wear only. Dust wrapper is a little sunned to the spine but otherwise in excellent condition. Internally firmly bound, pages are bright and clean. Fine
