About This Item

Chicago: Alan Swallow, 1959. Softcover. Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Hugo . Signed by Author. SIGNED at first free endpaper by the author, "Gael, with friend ship. Anais," with "friendship" rendered as two words, not one. No additional copies of this novel in this signed state and of this edition available currently on-line. Angela Anaïs Juana Antolina Rosa Edelmira Nin y Culmell was born in Paris, France, of Spanish-French-Danish parentage. She emigrated to the U.S. at age 11. Her Diary ran to 103 volumes by the publication of this volume in 1959 (Wikipedia). She came to the defense of and published the first book by a woman about D.H. Lawrence and wrote prefaces and forewords for Henry Miller, Lawrence Durrell and many other, mostly male, masculine authors. She was also a neo-Freudian psychoanalyst under the tutelage of Dr. Otto Rank (publisher's blurb). Sturdy, still tightly bound softcover copy, moderate wear to and mild soiling of covers, less to text-block, but with neither underlining nor highlighting. Slight forward cock to spine. Some foxing to endpapers, less to the remainder. Perfectly readable, usable copy. Illustrated at half-title (a brilliant peacock in black-and-white) by "Ian Hugo," Hugh Parker Guiler (February 15, 1898 – January 7, 1985), her husband from 1923 until her death in 1977 (while she was also married to another man). Ian Hugo was a skilled engraver and filmmaker in his own right, too. Another fine line drawing of his black-and-white is bound in, being of two women and/in a floral design, quite abstract. A Spy in the House of Love was published first in 1954. As one would expect from reading her diaries and letters, the novel depicts a smart woman who wants to enjoy and experience less encumbered sexual behavior, just as men have. Her diaries provide the raw materials for this novel and for Ladders to Fire, Cities of the Interior, Children of the Albatross and others. [4], 5-140 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Synopsis

Beautiful, bored and bourgeoise, Sabina leads a double life inspired by her relentless desire for brief encounters with near-strangers. Fired into faithlessness by a desperate longing for sexual fulfilment, she weaves a sensual web of deceit across New York. But when the secrecy of her affairs becomes too much to bear, Sabina makes a late night phone-call to a stranger from a bar, and begins a confession that captivates the unknown man and soon inspires him to seek her out...
