About This Item

New York: William Sloane Associates, Inc., 1947 WYSIWYG pricing--no added shipping charge for standard shipping within USA. Green cloth with blind-stamped illustration of ducks flying over a marsh wrapping around both boards and spine, gilt titles on spine, maps on endpapers, [v]. 227 pp, numerous pen-and-ink illustrations. Many light bumps & some soiling to board edges, spine ends & corners rubbed, one corner just rubbed through, a couple of small soiled spots on edges. Both DJ flaps are price-clipped, a 1½ X 3 cm chip to white space at top of front flap, spine ends chipped, extremities lightly rubbed, offsetting from an unidentified publication on rear panel. From the DJ: "...this out-of-the-ordinary book is about one of the most usual and ordinary of events, the coming of spring. ... The winds and the skies, the migration of birds, and the leafing of trees form its framework, but there is a vivid abundance of other subjects: the author digresses at will to discuss Pliny and the flight of the ring-billed gull, or King Louis the Pious in the year 814 and how literature colors and enriches our response to nature. If you think of the sky as something more than what you see at the end of the street, and if you are not satisfied to be bounded by stone and steel and paving block and surrounded by trolley cars, skyscrapers, and movie palaces, Louis Halle's discovery of the wilderness at the heart of a large city will be a delight and a refreshment." Shipping weight 2 lbs.. First Edition. . VG-/VG. Illus. by Francis L. Jaques. 22 X 14½ cm.
