About This Item
Bodley Head, London, 2012. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. A standout association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the title page to Legends of the Fall novelist Jim Harrison and his wife: "To Jim + Linda--with warm salutes and veneration from across the hill. David Q, 10/24/11." Also laid in is a three-sentence handwritten note (ALS) to Harrison on Quammen's personal stationary (8 x 10") conveying the book. After the pandemic, this prescient investigation is now one of the books of our times. A nice connection between Montana writers, and an unusual copy for being the British edition, which is scarce signed. A near fine book with one dogeared page where the note is laid in and a touch of waviness to the text block (very modest); in a near fine jacket with rubbing, slight edge wear, and some light creasing to spine crown. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
