INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, W. Averell Harriman at the front panel to Harry Truman's friend Rufus Burrus with a warm and lengthy inscription and dated May 8, 1976. Very Good in Very Good DJ: The Book shows indications of very light use: three pages show pencil margin lines and one pages shows PENCIL UNDERLINING; the mildest nudges to the corner tips and a hint of shelving wear to the bottom edges of the boards; paper-clip marks to the top edges of the front endpapers; faint foxing to the top edge and sparser foxing to the fore-edge; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of any creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing mild wear and minor cosmetic flaws. Not so very far from 'As New'. The DJ shows light wear to extremities, mainly to the head and heel of the back-strip; a tiny snag at the bottom edge of the rear panel; moderate rubbing to the panels; unclipped. Hardback with DJ. William Averell Harriman (1891 1986) was an American Democratic politician, businessman, and diplomat. The son of railroad baron E. H. Harriman, he served as Secretary of Commerce under President Harry S. Truman, and later as the 48th Governor of New York. He was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1952 and 1956, as well as a core member of the group of foreign policy elders known as "The Wise Men".
