About This Item

New York: Self (Howard Fast), 1952. A Later Printing (4th) of the First Trade Edition of this famous novel, basis of Stanley Kubrick's film (screenplay by Dalton Trumbo, and starring Kirk Douglas) - not only a great film, but historically important because it broke the Blacklist. Self-published by Fast. This is a Near Fine copy. Orange cloth binding with black lettering; slight bump to one corner; minor offsetting to the endpapers, and a previous-owner signature to the front paste-down. The striking dustjacket features a drawing by the great African-American artist Charles White, and is in Very Good condition. There are some small chips (head & foot of spine, corners of panels). The jacket is darkened on the spine and starting to tan. True to his convictions, the rear panel bears a union printing label; now in an archival plastic protector. Withal, a very presentable copy of this great and scarce work. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Later Printing.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good.

Synopsis

Spartacus, a fictionalization of a slave revolt in ancient Rome in 71 B.C., is well known today partly because of the 1960 movie starring Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier. It was originally published in 1951 by the author himself, after being turned down by every mainstream publisher of the day because of Fast's blacklisting for his Communist Party sympathies. The story of Spartacus, born a slave, trained as a gladiator, who led a slave revolt that was eventually put down by Crassus, was immensely popular, has sold millions of copies, and has gone through nearly a hundred editions. The appearance of this title brings back into print a book that many regard as a classic, and is enhanced with a new introduction by the author.
