About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1931. First Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Fair. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. The author's second book, after winning the Pulitzer Prize for Laughing Boy. The bright orange cloth has minor wear at edges, and the green topstain is a little uneven. The jacket has a few internal tape repairs, and a largeish chip at the top of the rear panel, which affects the author's name at the top of the biographical blurb. Laid in is a TLS from the publisher to a bookseller in Omaha which states: "It gives us great pleasure to send you, with our compliments, an advance copy of SPARKS FLY UPWARD, by Oliver La Farge, the author of LAUGHING BOY and the 1930 Pulitzer Prize winner." The second paragraph discusses Laughing Boy in more detail. The letter is signed by B. H. Ticknor. There is a postscript stating that SPARKS FLY UPWARD will be published on October 21st. The letter is folded to fit the envelope, but otherwise is fine, as is the envelope. There is nothing in or on the book to identify it as an advance copy, other than the letter.
