Spanish Conquest of New Mexico, Read before the Pennsylvania Historical Society May 13, 1872

Heavy rubbing and half inch pieces missing from spine ends. Gilt and bands on spine, binding tight. Marbled endpapers have chips, and first free endpaper is loose and missing pieces. Ex-library bookplate from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the publishers, which indicates the date and presenter of the speech. Text has several lined blank pages as filler on either end. Light soil on some pages. Laid in is a signed handwritten memo from the letterhead of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania from John William Wallace, President, regarding the society thanking General William Watts Hart Davis, or W. W. H. Davis, for his presentation, dated the same date as the speech. John William Wallace was an attorney and recorder of decisions of the Supreme Court for many years. The memo is also signed by the secretary of the society, James Shrigley, a Civil War chaplain. The memo and some pages of the speech have the blind stamp of the society. First page has a handwritten note, "May 13th, 1872, by W. W. H. Davis." Speech text has a few minor penciled corrections. The speech gives a summary of the Spanish Conquest and Pueblo Revolts in New Mexico. General Davis was a Colonel in the Mexican War of 1846-1848 and a Brigadier General in the Civil War. He authored several books including El Gringo; Or, New Mexico and Her People, a personal account of his time in 1850s New Mexico as district attorney. ; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; 41 pp; Signed by Editor .
