About This Item

(Cape Town: Nasionale Boekhandel, 1964). 8vo; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; dustwrapper; pp. 100 + (viii). Dustwrapper a little rubbed; some tape marks and foxing to endpapers; some spotting to edges and occasionally elsewhere. Good condition. This manual covers such subjects as precedence, social lists and selection of guests, formal calling, visiting cards, invitations, functions and entertainments, modes of address, decorations, orders and medals, and correspondence (official and private). "In our day when we are so free in dress and conduct that hardly any rules seem to apply, protocol has great merit if it can impart more decorum to our multi-mannered society. Miss Nicol has from her wide experience, and from official documents, produced a vade-mecum for the South African so complete that there must be little that she has overlooked. If she has taken her subject beyond our borders - far and often - that must also have value for the information on conventions observed by others with whom we are in frequent touch." .
