New York: Random House, 1936. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. SIGNED. Slim quarto [25 cm] in 1/4 parchment vellum with rose-gold foil boards and the title in red on the backstrip. Title page printed in red and black. Deckled fore-edges. With the publisher's original paper band, with small chips to the edges. Housed in publisher's cream slipcase with a gold foil wraparound. Rubbing to foiled boards, toning to backstrip, darkening to endpapers (more so the front) from gluing process during production. Interior is unmarked. In the slipcase, with moderate rubbing to the extremities, and significant areas of darkening. Illustrated by Lynd Ward with twenty-one engravings printed in black. From an edition of 1250 signed and numbered copies, of which this is number 1178. Signed by Ward on the limitation page. A story told entirely through wood engravings. This is the fifth of six wordless novels that Ward produced between 1929 and 1937. Dance 009.
