The Song of Songs was the inspiration of many theological commentators, especially during the twelfth century, when St. Bernard of Clairvaux in particular devoted an important series of sermons to it. The present text is a version which is in part a romance, in part an allegorical interpretation of the work which was written in the north of France for a lay public. It is preserved in only one manuscript, and has never before been edited in full.
