Association copy, signed and inscribed on front free endpaper to Fay Alderson, daughter of Nannie and Walter Alderson who are featured in the final chapter, "Some Lived far from Town": "For Fay Alderson with gratitude and best wishes, Dorothy M. Johnson, West Rattlesnake Gulch, Missoula, Montana." Unstated edition, presumed first. Green cloth boards with silver spine titling. Light green illustrated jacket. Sixteen black and white photographic plates. A collection of true stories of women in the early West by the author of the stories "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and "A Man Called Horse." Fay's marginalia on a few pages, explaining her personal connection to other people featured and providing additional details. Rear endpapers have newspaper articles about various Alderson familly members tipped in. Minor bumping and edge wear to boards, tape stains to pastedowns. Jacket shows moderate chipping and wear, with discolored tape repairs.
