London: Duckworth & Co, 1916. paperback. Folio size hardcover, no jacket. Cover measures 14 3/4" by 10". Second edition. First edition 1915 published by Duckworth & Co. This 1916 edition book includes a collection of satirical illustrations by W. Heath Robinson depicting World War I. Contains 24 full page black and white plates with a caption page with a silhouette vignette preceding each plate. Seven additional silhouette vignettes are included on other pages. Large pictorial silhouettes are included on the endpapers. These drawings first appeared in "The Sketch" and "The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News", and gained popularity amongst the people at home as well as the members of ranks in the Army, Navy and Flying Corps. Published by Duckworth & Co. First printed in 1915, this is the 1916 second edition. In good condition with some staining on front and back covers. Front hinge partially cracked. Heath Robinson (1872-1944) was a painter, cartoonist and book illustrator who was a household name in Britain. Robinson developed his forte with drawings of gadgets satirizing the absurdities of modern life, from removing warts to peeling potatoes. According to H. G. Wells, his "absurd, beautiful drawings give me a peculiar pleasure of the mind like nothing else in the world.

Endpapers have double-page silhouette illustrations of "Lighting Back" (an exploding artillery gun) and "The Free Lance" (a shrapnel-ridden German Monoplane). Some very light finger marks to page margins. Front hinge cracked but still very firm. 25 x 37.5 cm. Original printed decorative paper covered boards. Publisher's red cloth spine, very slightly worn at head and tail and with a few minor horizontal creases. Upper board with red and black caricature of grenade juggling German officer within black lettering. Rear cover withred and black caricature of German soldier lying on his back and artillery shell heading down towards him. Corners, edges and rear board very slightly worn.
