DESCRIPTION

(ii) + 420pp + (ii)

Books measure 220mm x 140mm approximately.

Bound in dark olive calf. Spine with five gilt-ruled bands, gilt boxed and decorated compartments and red title label. Gilt fillet borders to both boards. Engraved frontispiece to title page verso.

CONDITION

Very good condition overall with binding holding very firm. A few surface scratches and the odd mark to boards, with very light wear to hinges. Internally the pages are mostly clean with some uniform and expected ageing throughout, some shadowing margins to end-papers and paste-downs and a few foxing spots to engraving. Pages 33 to 48 are more heavily spotted for some reason. The latter half of pages have some feint water marking stains to the lower right corner.

Please refer to the photo images for a clear indication of both condition and content.

INTERESTING

Johann Georg Zimmermann (1728 to 1795) was a Swiss philosophical writer, naturalist, and physician. He studied at Göttingen, where he took the degree of a doctor of medicine, and established his reputation by the dissertation, De irritabilitate (1751).

After traveling in the Netherlands and France, he practised as a physician in Brugg, and wrote Über die Einsamkeit ("Of solitude", 1756, 1784–85) and Vom Nationalstolz ("Of national pride", 1758). These books made a great impression in Germany, and were translated into almost every European language.

In 1768 he settled at Hanover as private physician of George III with the title of a Hofrat. Catherine II invited him to the court of St Petersburg, but this invitation he declined.

He attended Frederick the Great during that monarch's last illness, and afterwards issued various books about him.
