About This Item
As New, gently read once by me. Pages clean and fresh. Dust jacker pristine. A well researched book on the life of the much loved war correspondent, Ernie Pyle. From the days of he and his wife Jerry driving cross country during the depression interviewing the common people struggling to put a crust of bread on the table because there just was no money, to his days as a war correspondent with people reading his column from coast to coast.
I did not know Ernie's wife had mental problems which is very well researched in this book. Ernie loved living in Albuquerque for its open spaces and fresh, clean air. They were both alchoholics and it took a toll on both her mental state and his physical ailments. Ernie would be gone for many months at a time to the front battle lines in Europe which would devastate any marriage.
My father and Ernie Pyle were good friends as they both were correspondents for Scripps-Howard newspapers. I'm sure it was a hard blow to my father when he got the news that Ernie had been cut down by a Japaneese machine gunner on Okinawa.
I recommend this book as it is easy to read, the author has a good style, captivating in its descriptions of the battles, and makes you want to pull up some of Ernie's columns and read them, slowly. He had a deep understanding of what our US Service men and women gave to keep is free and that is what the folks back home loved to read.
