I, partially cracked but holding firm; chip slong the joint of vol. III; thumb size scuff to top front corner vol. III; two ink signatures in each volume; vol. I with Glasgow bookseller's label for John Smith & Son corner of front pastedown; some tanning to endpapers, prelims. Overall a solid set with clean text pages. ; Original green cloth over drab boards, paper spine labels. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Martineau traveled to the United States in the early 1830s, and her observations and insights during her journey formed the basis for this work. The book is considered one of the earliest and most comprehensive accounts of American society and culture during the 19th century. Includes many criticisms of American economics and social institutions, notably the institution of slavery. .
