About This Item

New York: National Civic Federation, 1907. Paperback. 138, [2] , frontispiece portrait, wraps. 7 x 5 in. Top corner of front wrapper creased; minor edge wear, otherwise Very Good. On front cover: "A series of lectures delivered at Columbia University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago, under the auspices of the Public Lecture Bureau of the National Civic Federation.". The British novelist Mallock critiques his socialist contemporaries, arguing, among other things, that management, not labor, is the source of wealth. A heavily revised reworking of these lectures was later published as "A Critical Examination of Socialism" (1908). Bernard Shaw responded in part to this in "Socialism and Superior Brains.".
