Original brown cloth, recently rebacked retaining nearly all of the original spine; spine label mostly lacking. A Presentation copy INSCRIBED by the author on the front blank: "To/William Wordsworth Esq./with the author's/compliments." In addition this copy is SIGNED by the recipient on the title page: "W Wordsworth/Rydal Mount." In this volume, and in a second that was issued the following year, Ord attempted a history of England in verse. His efforts were not well received. One reviewer in THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE claimed "that the author has formed his manner and style too much on that of Lord Byron in exaggeration, impetuosity, and a perpetual straining for effect." A scarce book from Wordsworth's library. Old bookseller description laid in. Housed in a new calf-backed slipcase with cloth chemise.

It is found in an autograph booklet signed by 29 journalists attending The Annual Conference of the Institute of Journalists in London. In September 1900, Winston Churchill was just 25 years old, a soldier and war-correspondent who had yet to hold elected office. On 8 September 1900, Churchill wrote to his mother, Lady Randolph: "My dear Mamma, I am sorry not to be able to come until Wednesday morning, but I thought it better to attend the Annual Dinner of the Conference of the Institute of Journalists, at which I have been invited to reply for the war-correspondents. It is a good thing now and again to make a speech unconnected with politics and it is also a good thing, and opportunity not to be missed, to speak before the writers of Great Britain. This is copy number 1172 of 1200 signed by Matisse in pencil on colophon.100 colourful crayon and pencil lithographs on loose pages, printed on thick Velin d'Arches paper at the Mourlot workshop in Paris. Illustrated frontis of medieval poet Charles, Duke of Orleans [1394-1465], who, taken prisoner after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Many of his poems were written during his long captivity over a 25 year period. He wrote courtly and romantic poems set in ballad and rondeau forms. The poems are lithographed in Matisse own hand, with decorative borders with multiple colours. Wrappers yellowed, and stained along spine and joints of front cover. Rubbing to spine edges.
