New York: Viking, 1962 Blue cloth pictorially stamped in white and red, sunning to board edges, light shelf wear; color pictorial dust jacket is worn at folds with a 1" chip from top of spine, edge tears, original price intact ($3.00) and NO award seal. One of the most popular, and important, 20th Century picture books, awarded the Caldecott medal in 1963. The Snowy Day marked a turning point in American picturebooks, being the first popular release to feature a protagonist of African descent. Along with Leo Lionni, Ezra Jack Keats helped shape the immediate future of picturebooks, popularizing the use of sparse text, collage and abstract imagery over pen & brush and representational artwork. This copy is inscribed by Keats to book designer, Jane Byers Bierhorst, who worked with Keats on later books. First editions of The Snowy Day are rare, signed or inscribed first editions are almost unheard of. See Bader pgs 379-80 and Peterson & Solt pgs 323-4. Signed by Author. First Edition. Pictorial Cloth. Near Fine/Good. Illus. by Ezra Jack Keats. Small 4to.

Description:
Philadelphia: Edward Stern & Co, 1910 (1910). Green cloth with color pictorial pastedown, spine very slightly sunned, negligible abrasions to front pastedown, internally clean and bright, binding nice and square. From the author of the well-known "Roosevelt Bears" books, comes this adventure tale told in verse about a little boy, Prince Domino. He and his siamese cat, who is very smart indeed, travel to far off lands where they are helped by a little black and a little Japanese boy (the depictions of whom are slightly stereotypical). The story is enhanced by many wonderful, crisp & detailed b&w line drawings as well as seven full page color plates, the image from the cover is not repeated within. . First Edition. Near Fine. 8vo.
