About This Item

Whittier, John Greenleaf. SNOW-BOUND, A WINTER IDYL. Boston: Ticknor & Fields, 1866. First edition, first issue with page 52 numbered. Original green cloth, gilt, with a card autographed by Whittier in his usual purple ink tipped in. Faint dampmark along top edge of front cover, else a lovely copy with few signs of rubbing, the text tight and clean. The genuine first issue of this book is so rare that it attracted forgers as early as the 1920s; the second issue is fairly common. The later editions (marked with "thousand" statements) are frequently misrepresented as first editions. This nostalgic poem shares a distinction with only five other American works of being on both the Grolier English Hundred (100) and Grolier American Hundred (73). BAL 21862.
