Bright,publisher's original red cloth boards with bright,crisp,stamped gilt smuggler silhouette,to upper and stamped letters to spine/backstrip and minimal marking to boards and plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB,minus dw/dj,2-167pp includes half-title,recto of same has a b/w line illus frntis, illustrated title page,author preface,illustrations list (41 all called for),16 chapters and an index.Illustrated by Paul Hardy (b1862),the author and from old prints and photographs. Paul Hardy,born near Bath,Somerset, son of artist David Hardy and brother of Evelyn Stuart Hardy.Lived at Bexley Heath,Kent,and Chobham,Surrey.Illustrator,watercolour painter and metal worker.A prolific illustrator of adventure stories,especially in magazines,and a contributor to CHUMS for over forty years(1896-1940).Hardy was attentive to historical detail,particularly the rigging of ships and period costume (of which he formed a collection to be worn by the models from whom he generally drew).
