About This Item
London: Chapman & Hall Ltd, 1909. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6". Paul Hardy. A first edition copy of this fascinating history of smuggling, complete with illustrations. First edition. Illustrated throughout with frontispiece and thirty-five plates. Collated complete. Opinions have ever been divided on the question of the morality, or the immorality, of smuggling. Despite the author's intent to write purely for entertainment, this history of smugglers is said to romanticise their exploits, and obscure their more horrendous crimes. Written by Charles George Harper, an English author and illustrator. Illustrated by Paul Hardy, an English illustrator, best known for his regular illustrations in The Strand Magazine. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and rubbing to the extremities. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light scattered spotting. Contemporary inscription to the front pastedown. Very Good
