Kreisler, the most famous and beloved violinist of the early 20th century, was the youngest person to ever enter the Vienna Conservatory of Music. Known for his arresting and lush tone, that was said to be recognizable instantly, he also became quite notorious for a classical fraud of the most complimentary sway: for years he performed pieces that he stated were forgotten compositions by Couperin, Vivaldi and other greats. Years later he confessed rather lightly that they were, in fact, his own works. This was met with criticism by musicologists, but public opinion changed little, in fact he rode out the scandal well, adding himself that it was only a compliment that they were under illusion so completely. During his illustrious musical life, he played instruments by noted luthiers Antonio Stradivari, Pietro Guarneri, Giuseppe Guarneri, and Carlo Bergonzi, most of which eventually came to bear his name. The Stradivarius instruments that he owned at one time are: The Lady Inchiquin The Earl of Plymouth The Greville The Huberman and The Lord Amherst of Hackney. Around the turn of the century, on a steamship journey, he met and proposed to a wealth tobacco heiress , Harriet Lies Woerz. They remained married until his death in NYC in 1962.
