About This Item
London: William Heinemann,, 1920. First trade edition, first impression, attractively bound by Bayntun. A contemporary review noted that Rackham had been given "plenty of scope for imagination, and quaint and graceful are his silhouette figures... No one would attempt criticism. There are plenty of rats and plenty of sketches". Octavo (241 x 180 mm). Bound by Bayntun in blue morocco, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, covers decorated in gilt, gilt edges, marbled endpapers. Silhouette frontispiece and illustrated title page printed in green, pink, and black, tipped-in colour plate within illustrated frame, three double-page illustrations printed in green, pink, and black, silhouette illustrations throughout the text. Some light marks to covers, occasional minor foxing; a very good and attractive copy. Riall, p. 141; The English Review, December 1919, p. 582.
