MP3 Audio CD. The Sleeping Beauty and other fairy tales From the Old French THE SLEEPING BEAUTY Once upon a time there lived a King and a Queen, who lacked but one thing on earth to make them entirely happy. The King was young, handsome, and wealthy; the Queen had a nature as good and gentle as her face was beautiful; and they adored one another, having married for love--which among kings and queens is not always the rule. Moreover, they reigned over a kingdom at peace, and their people were devoted to them. What more, then, could they possibly want? Well, they wanted one thing very badly, and the lack of it grieved them more than words can tell. They had no child. Vows, pilgrimages, all ways were tried; yet for a long while nothing came of it all, and the poor Queen especially was in despair. New York: George H. Doran Company, 1923. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Dulac, Edmund. In original dust jacket, octavo size, 228 pp. The classic fairy tales in this collection have been told and retold countless times, to the delight of children and adults alike; here, Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch (1863-1944) offers his own rendition of the stories. Quiller-Couch, known for his literary criticism and his anthology of poetry "The Oxford Book of English Verse", faithfully translates Perrault's French text, in an entertaining and accessible edition of these fairy tales.
Accompanying the text are stunning illustrations by renowned French-British artist Edmund Dulac (1882-1953), who brings to life the popular stories such as "The Sleeping Beauty", "Cinderella", and "Bluebeard" with his delicate sense of detail and colour.
___DESCRIPTION: Full red cloth, illustration and lettering in gilt on the front board, gilt lettering and illustration on the spine, endpapers with floral borders and ornaments in red, frontispiece a full-colour tipped-in plate by Edmund Dulac, with caption from "The Sleeping Beauty", title page with decorative border and illustration in black by Dulac, sixteen colour plates (including frontispiece) by Dulac tipped in throughout, each with guard page with caption; octavo size (9.25" by 6.25"), pagination: [i-vi] vii-xxi [xxii-xxiv] 25-228. In the original brown paper dust jacket with illustration and lettering, matching the front board of the book, in dark brown on the front panel, brown lettering and illustration on the spine, publisher's device in dark brown on the rear panel, a list of other books by the publisher on the front and rear flaps; the dust jacket is unclipped with the original price of the book included in the list of books on the front flap.
___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the corners, corners are gently bumped, and there is very slight cracking to the gutter of pages 192 and 193, and pages 160 and 161. The dust jacket is very good, unclipped, clean overall but for a few stray marks to the rear panel and to the interior of the spine, overall edge wear, some chipping to the head and tail of the spine and to the tops and bottoms of the folds, rubbing to the joints and spine, with a very slight loss of text at the head and tail.

Description:
Hodder and Stoughton, Publishers. Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. This copy is undated. Thee are fifteen tipped-in plates, most with tissue guards. The boards are dark blue. I gather that the first edition had thirty plates, and that this copy probably dates to the 1920's. The plates are very beautiful. The condition of the text is deplorable, however. A highly acidic paper was used, and the book is marred throughout by foxing. The plates are unaffected by this. I am not a fan of the practice of tearing up books to remove the illustrations, but in this case, I wuld recommend doing just that. Buy fifteen little frames and voila, you have an adorable array of high Victorian miniatures. Fast shipping, with tracking number provided. ; 165 pages .
