Representative Iverson articulates the view of the South regarding the expansion of slavery into the West, as the US has acquired new territories after the Mexican War: "The first step in this great political and fanatical drama is the one now demanded, the exclusion of slavery from the newly acquired Territories of this Republic. If the South submits, the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia will follow in quick succession—then the overthrow of the slave trade between the States—then the application of the public treasure, drained from Southern pockets by partial laws and extravagant tariffs, to the purchase of Southern slaves from Southern owners—and, lastly, universal emancipation by act of Congress."Reviews
