About This Item

Philadelphia: G.B. Zieber & Co., 1845. First Edition Thus. . Full-Leather. Fair To Good/No Jacket. Though not credited in this edition, the author is Richard Alfred Davenport, an early 18th century English writer who wrote poetry as well as several other "general interest" books and who died in squalid conditions of an apparent drug overdose (laudanum, an opium preparation). From Chapter I: "Incredulity has been said . to be the foundation of all wisdom . but on the other hand, to say that credulity is the foundation of all folly, is an assertion more consonant with experience . and this subject forms a curious chapter in the history of the human mind." 6 x 4 inches, 283 pages in full leather binding with gold lettering in black title label on spine. Appears to be First American Edition after two previous editions (1837 and 1840) issued in England by T. Teggs. No illustrations. Boards are worn with several small stains; corners slightly bumped; front exterior hinge cracked, rear hinge intact; interior hinges partially cracked but holding; binding is tight and firm. Text edges lightly foxed, soiled; individual pages show sporadic soiling and staining, a few pages are creased/dogearred. A handwritten note on fep indicates book was at one time in a school library. Ink from the note has bled through, leaving "shadows" on following page and lightly on title page. That said, this copy is complete, fully legible and, in spite of damage to hinges, in remarkably good condition.
