About This Item

1835 1ed American West INDIANS Ohio Valley Melville Hall 2v Sketches of History

James Hall's 'Sketches of History, Life and Manners' is a fascinating 1835 account of life in the American West. Beginning in the early 19th-century, Americans began migrating westward encountering early European settlements, Native American Indian tribes, and dangerous animals and health threats. This book provides important details on new states finding statehood, as well as civil institutions being established throughout the American west. It should also be noted that this book was the primary source for Herman Melville's book 'The Confidence Man'.

Notes from Field on this book:

"Narratives of frontier warfare with the Indians, and incidents of Indian life, fill almost all the pages of these interesting volumes."

Per Flanagan,

"a rather detailed account of the first trans-Allegheny explorations, with ample treatment of the early French settlements and the infiltration of the Scotch-Irish Pioneers into Kentucky and Ohio. The character and habits of the pioneers, early education and literature in the Ohio Valley, felons and desperadoes, and the exploits of George Rogers Clark."
